U8 Boys/Girls

To go along with basics there is an effort made to try to let the kids learn the different areas of the game (attacking, defending, transition between the two).  There also may be some strategical tendencies shown to the kids such as how to lineup for a kick-off as well as how to handle a kickoff.  This is led through once a week practices by the coaches.  There will be a couple of practices before the season starts and then they will continue as the season progresses.

Standard of play for this age group:
  • Size 3 ball
  • 4v4 (no goalkeepers)
  • Shin guards are required
  • 4 10 minute quarters
  • All players are asked for play offense and defense.  There should be no camping of a player in a defensive or offensive position.

Referees are used at this age group and all standard rules of FIFA will apply at this age level, with some exceptions.  Since kids are still learning the concepts of the game and due to limited time constraints for coaches to include everything about the game, minor infractions, such as an illegal throw-in, will be used as a teaching/learning opportunity for the kids and the opportunity to redo the action will be allowed instead of a change of possession being called.  There will be no direct free kicks at this age.  All penalties will be handled with an indirect free kick.

Build out line
On the field for this age group is a blue "build out line".  This is used for goal kicks and also potentially used for offsides.  At this time we do not use the line to call offsides, however we will not promote the practice of camping an offensive player in order to gain an attacking advantage.  For goal kicks this will require the players from the other team to stand behind this line until the ball is put into play.  The line can be crossed as soon as the ball is put into play.  The purpose of this is to give the defending team a chance to get the ball out from their end without any pressure.
